The area of Montecopiolo comprehends Carpegna Mountain (1415 m above sea level), Montone Mountain (1104 m), and Pennuzza Mountain (925 m).
Montecopiolo is full of small villages scattered all over the territory, among them the most famous is Villagrande, where there is the town hall. Villagrande is a very charming place mostly because of its position, since it is situated between two mountains appearing like a pearl closed inside a shell.
The Conca river arises at 1375 m above sea level, after crossing the homonymous valley for a distance of 47 km it flows into Adriatic sea.
Nowadays only an archeological evidence of Montecopiolo Castle remains. However, it is interesting to visit it because of its wonderful panorama, which is possible to observe from the rocky spur at 1030 m above sea level, where it is located.
The hermitage of Carpegna Mountain is located at about 1300 m. It is a place of faith and some documents demonstrate that it was built in the 13th century, but unfortunately after the Second World War it was changed a lot. The so-called “Madonna del Faggio” sanctuary takes its name from a miracle. According to the tradition, the Virgin image was found hanging on a beech tree. It was carried to the valley, so that everybody could honor it. However, the next day it was found again hanging on the beech tree.
This area is characterized by a great naturalistic value, since it consists of wide areas of forest of coniferous, hornbeam and beech trees. It is possible to follow different routes, either by walking or riding bike, or on horseback. Among marked paths we recommend “I sentieri del Montefeltro” (Paths of Montefeltro). In winter it is possible to dedicate yourselves to the ski.
There is a lake of glacial origins at the foot of Palazzolo Mountain. Its surface amounts to 7000 m2. Many species of fishes live there, such as carps, catfishes and goldfishes. It is also possible to play sport fishing.
According to a legend, when St. Francis went through the lake of Villagrande, he was enchanted by quietness of this place. For this reason he decided to create a convent there. The project had never realized, so he though to give a special blessing to this area. In a few words, according to his blessing earthquake will never attack them. Although it is only a legend, until now it is true!
