DESCRIPTION

Mercatello sul Metauro represents both a journey through time and an immersion in nature. It is a small hamlet of only 1481 people and it is located in the Municipality of Pesaro-Urbino at 429 m above sea level between Umbria and Tuscany. It is very appreciated for its beauty, for this reason in 2002 it was selected and certified with the orange flag by “Italian Touring Club”, i.e. the association that selected excellent hamlets of the hinterland. The orange flag is a prestigious recognition that confirms importance and beauty of artistic, historical and cultural heritage of this wonderful village. We recommend to visit this picturesque village, which is medieval and magic, but also surrounded by enchanting nature. 

MONUMENTS - ARTWORKS - TOWNS AND VILLAGES

For those who love art and history, it is interesting to visit this medieval village, which used to be one of the most important castles of Massa Trabaria. We recommend to visit the Church and the museum of St. Frances in Romanesque-Gothic style, which includes art works like “Crucified Christ” (dated 1309, oil on panel) by Giovanni da Rimini, the “Polittico” (dated 1345, panel painting) by Giovanni Baronzio with 9 panels portraying the Madonna and Saints, the “Mausoleo” (15^th century) by Bartolomeo Brancaleoni, which is a monument made of travertine stone in Venetian-Gothic style.

Furthermore, we recommend to visit the “Pieve Collegiata” with a beautiful Lady of Graces 13^th century), which is an old Byzantine icon made by an anonymous and preserved in a precious shrine of carved and golden wood. Another must to see is the “Collegiata” museum with a wide collection of sacred furniture and other paintings of the 16^th century and other periods, such as the Immaculate Conception by Raffellin del Colle, the “St. Borromeo” by Giovan Francesco Guerrieri.

Finally, it is interesting to visit the Civic Museum, which is characterized by a very wide exhibition contains art works of rare beauty and undisputed quality.

Mercatello is surrounded by relaxing and gorgeous nature, so that you can choose among many options for a long walk. For horse lovers it is also possible to take a horseback riding immersed in green sceneries of the Marche.
