The territory of Montegrimano belonged to the Malatesta of Rimini and the Montefeltro of Urbino, one after the other, until 1947 when Federico da Montefeltro (Duck of Urbino) conquered it again thanks to the help of people from Montegrimano. The history of Montegrimano is strictly connected to the fate of Urbino Ducky until 1631, when it became part of the Papal State. The castle did not work anymore as advanced defense (ensured both from San Leo and San Marino) to defend itself from Rimini. So its decline and its transformation into a town started. After Italian Unification current urban structure takes place.
The old town center of Monte Grimano was created around the old tower, which raised in the middle of fortified walls. It was rebuilt in the 15th century in Romanesque-style. In 1600 it was changed through a strange dome, which was rebuilt in the 19th century as it currently it appears.
In 1700 a clock was added, which still exists. The Civic tower is what remains of the Castle built in the 14th century under the request of Montefeltro family, together with underground rooms (currently incorporated with houses).
After the Second World War country houses surrounding the old town center almost completely disappeared.
